The wedding industry is one of the most lucrative spaces to start, build and grow a first-time business and it’s also one of the most fun! I stumbled into the wedding industry by accident after trying to start multiple failed businesses so I know from personal experience how much easier it is to start a business in weddings. This doesn’t mean it’s not a lot of heard work, but there’s definitely an incredible market (brides and grooms) who have money saved and put aside specifically to spend on their wedding. This is super important because it means you don’t have to convince them to spend money, they want to spend it! And do so willingly and happily!
12 Wedding Business Ideas:
(1) Wedding Planner – You could be the standard wedding planner who does “day-of”, “month-of”, partial and full wedding planning packages (or you could niche down and just do elopements, venue specific events, or even focus in on only micro weddings) π€
(2) Wedding Photographer – Focus in on your wedding photography style, then build up a a portfolio and market on social platforms! Start with doing events for free, styled shoots, or family portraits.
(3) Photo Booth – So many brides and grooms are looking for a photo booth these days. Having a company that has quality photo prints, amazing backdrops and props and a signature style sells big time. Plus you can hire a small team to handle your events and eventually run your own little business without even being there yourself! π·
(4) Wedding Florist πΈ – Got an eye for details? Creating beautiful floral arrangements can be more than a hobby and instead a lucrative business. We pay our florists between $200 – $400 for a single bouquet and about $1200 for a wedding floral arch, plus $200-$350 for table arrangements. This adds up quickly to thousands of dollars per wedding. It’s a lot of work but totally worth considering if florals is something you naturally feel drawn to and are good at working with!
(5) Wedding Altars – This is super niche and the perfect business for someone who is handy and comfortable building, setting up and not afraid to get their hands dirty. It would also make the perfect husband-wife team business. There are only a few wedding altar companies here in Hawaii who rent wedding altars out and we book them constantly! It’s best to have a few altar options (standard 2 post, circle, triangle, hexagon) and then just get a simple website up. We pay our altar people $300-$400++ for delivery, setup and breakdown and all they do is come in, set up the altar, leave and then break it down at the end of the event!
(6) Wedding Linens – Wedding table linens, chair covers, and napkins are something that doesn’t cost a lot of money upfront but which you can rent out over and over again for quite a lot of money. Brides and grooms spend thousands on linen rentals and set up and breakdown is included in the total cost. Another fairly easy business to start up and which has potential to take off!
(7) Wedding Babysitting – I know, this seems weird, but we have A LOT of weddings who are looking for babysitters for their guests kids. There aren’t any real business that are set up for this specifically but I swear if there was I’d use them all the time. Brides and grooms want their guests to have fun and not have to be worrying about their kids the whole night, a sitter on site allows guests to really enjoy the evening and they’re willing to pay good money for this! Wedding babysitters usually show up before the ceremony and have a separate space or room to watch kids in, they do fun things like temporary tattoos, bubbles, and movie nights while their parents get to be carefree for a minute. πΆπ»
(8) Specialty Rentals – Think boho lounge sets, parasols, lawn games, large fun signage! Brides and grooms love adding in special touches for their weddings and these items are always a hot commodity! We also have our couples pay for set-up, break-down and delivery! The cuter and more fun stuff you have the better!
(9) Wedding Officiant – This is a great space to make some extra side money or to go in as a full time business. The best officiants do events 4-8 times a week and at least here in Hawaii make $300-$500 per wedding event. You also can just show up that day, officiate a wedding and leave 2 hours later, plus be a part of a really special amazing moment. Getting ordained online is super easy too!
(10) Wedding Transportation – We use specialty transportation for at least half of our weddings and limos, shuttle or party busses are hard to find. There are only a few companies dedicated to weddings and these companies are always booked out solid. Brides and grooms love getting transportation for their guests (so they don’t have to worry about parking, drinking, etc.) and if you’re in a city with destination weddings this business idea is gold! π
(11) Wedding Venue – Got a beautiful oceanfront property, farm, or any space with a killer view? You could rent out the space on an hourly basis for events and make a killing! We pay our wedding venues anywhere from $1,000 – $10,000+ for a wedding day. Setting up for success may involve getting legal permits and insurance but it’s worth considering with such a high pay back. You can have the couple rent portable (fancy) restrooms and get them dropped onsite and have the catering and rentals handle making sure that there are trash receptacles and that the trash is removed at the end of the night. It’s a a big undertaking but if you set it up right it has the potential to make A LOT of money!
(12) Wedding Cakes π§ – Most brides want a wedding cake and many also want specialty items like cookies or a wedding dessert bar. If you’re a baker, this could totally be your thing. Most of our specialty wedding cake designers also deliver, drop-off, and set-up for an added fee. Some also rent out items like cake stands, cake cutting utensils and cake toppers (this adds to the total cost and increases potential revenue!)
If you’re thinking about starting a new business, there’s no better time than now! And no better industry to be in than the wedding industry. Trust me, there is a lot of money to be made in this space, and it’s one of the most fun jobs to have!
Been thinking about starting a business but feeling stuck? Totally get it. Being afraid is 100% normal – it’s a new, hard, scary, a big thing! … BUT that shouldn’t stop you from doing it any way because it could be one of the most incredibly amazing things you ever do!
Drop me a comment if you’re thinking of taking the leap! π
Rooting for you! ππΌ
